Family Safety Awareness Day

Beaumont Hospital, Trenton, 5450 Fort St., is hosting its ninth annual “Family Safety Awareness Day” to educate the community about how to stay safe in their homes, communities and beyond.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 19.

Activities include adult health screenings, bicycle safety inspections (bring yours), bicycle obstacle course, child identification kits, face painting, fire safety obstacle course, gun safety simulator, helicopter tour (weather permitting), fire safety smokehouse, Stop the Bleed training, SWAT Bearcat tour and free bottled water, pizza and ice cream.

Free bicycle helmets will be available from 10 a.m. to noon, while supplies last.

At 10:30 a.m., Stop the Bleed training will be offered in the hospital’s Administration Module in rooms 159 and 167. Registration is required. To register, call Brandy: 734-642-2213. This national campaign launched in response to multiple mass casualty events and seeks to empower every bystander with the knowledge and confidence to help in a bleeding emergency. You will learn to recognize life-threatening bleeding and be taught how to apply direct pressure to a bleeding wound, use and apply a tourniquet, pack a wound and know what to do until EMS arrives. Stop the Bleed class at Beaumont Hospital-Trenton 1

At noon, catch the demonstration given by the Flat Rock Police Department’s K-9 unit, including Officer Brian Tetreau and K-9 Zander.

At 1 p.m., see the “Jaws of Life” demonstration from the Woodhaven Fire Department.

Be sure to complete all the safety stations by 1:30 p.m. to qualify to enter the free bike contest. Donations from Beaumont, Trenton physicians make this contest possible.

Meet representatives of your local Department of Natural Resources, Downriver Dive Team, Downriver SWAT, fire departments, Lifeflight of Michigan, Michigan Search and Rescue, police departments, a railroad safety expert, Senior Alliance AAA 1-C and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

“It’s important for our community members to learn how to keep themselves and their families safe. We also want them to know our first responders and what community resources are available when needed,” said Barbie Loreto, RN, trauma injury prevention coordinator, Beaumont, Trenton. “We want to show how Beaumont Hospital, Trenton works with first responders and other agencies to help keep our campus safe and secure for them.”

Keep your family safe from fire. Be aware of the hazards in your home. And, be sure to have an escape plan. Pull together everyone in your household and make a plan. Walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes.

“Partner in Public Safety”

Brownstown Honor Guard in partnership with Lowes is presenting “Partner in Public Safety” to all Brownstown residents.

The Brownstown Honor Guard is comprised of both police and fire personnel whom have volunteered their time to represent all Public Safety personnel with the community. The ten member Brownstown Honor Guard was established in March of 2011. The unit was established with the primary goal of providing proper honors to members of the Public Safety Community who make the ultimate sacrifice in service to the community. Membership is voluntary, and time for training, and Honor Guard details, is donated by its members. Aside from its primary focus, the Honor Guard also participates in various community details such as presenting and or posting of the National Colors (The U.S. Flag) at events or ceremonies. In addition, the Honor Guard serves as the caretakers of, and liaison to, the Wall of Honor, which is located in the Township Recreation Campus as a place to honor the service of the communities Public Safety Employees.

There are no tax payer dollars utilized with the honor guard and all funds are donated by the community and various businesses. This group is also instrumental in providing scholarship monies to high school graduates of the schools served by our community.
Blue Light Brownstown- “Partner in Public Safety”

The men and women of the Brownstown Police and Fire Departments would like to thank you for being a “Partner in Public Safety”. This blue light is being presented by the Brownstown Public Safety Honor Guard as a symbol of the partnership between these guardians of public safety, and the community they have pledged to protect. Partnership between the citizens and their public safety professionals is vital to a safe community. As a testimony to this successful partnership, in 2016 Brownstown was rated Michigan’s 10th safest city by ValuePenguin.com. To celebrate this successful partnership, let this blue light shine on your porch as a beacon of your support to “Brownstown’s Finest”, your public safety guardians, and show your appreciation for their service and sacrifice.

If you are interested in participating, you will need to be a resident of Brownstown. Blue lights will be handed out by Honor Guard members while out serving the community. Residents can also get a blue light by going to the Brownstown Police Department 23125 King Rd. (11-3pm) or Fire Department 24150 Sibley Rd. (9-11am) Monday – Friday while supplies last.
